On 18th April, 2017 I went for an interview at Accenza Web Private Limited( https://www.accenza.com/). This blog is a short narration of the interview process to give my peers and juniors some idea of the approach and expectations one must have while appearing for a job interview. To utilize my spare time and to bring more examples for you people I occasionally sit for interview even some unnecessary once.
The vacancy at their place was encountered by me while browsing web and to be more specific Indeed, indeed.co.in. The job role was web and app tester. Having done Software Engineering well in my 7th semester I felt confident enough to apply for the position. I was called on the following day for the interview. So, I just got a night to prepare. I did the best and head for the interview at morning. Their office is located at Rabindra Sadan Metro. I reached there sharp at 12 noon.
I expected a long queue but as a relief I could see only 5 candidates except me. Phew, competition was less I exclaimed.
On interacting with the other candidates I learnt that I was the only guy there who is inexperienced in software testing and even has not passed his B.Tech :p
Albeit, I held on my confidence. The first applicant was called and hurled with questions. As much I could listen it let me know that she had a 5 month job experience. She was asked a series of HR an Technical questions.
Then came my call. I walked in completely confident. As I took my seat I was Informed by HR that my interview would be taken by a test team head. That was seriously lunatic, a newbie facing an expert.
He got in and relaxed. He asked me few question which I would like to mention as points.
- Introduce yourself
- Are you well versed with Java?
- Why software testing is require?.
- What is Integration testing?
- What is gray box testing?
- What is sanity testing?
- What is system testing?
I have seen many times students contemplating on what to say and what not and finally they end up conveying the same information which is already being mentioned in the CV.
The best way to answer it is via following few points.
- Talk of something which is not being mentioned in your CV.
- Highlight the reason behind your taking the stream or department you are in.
- Try to bring in your strengths.
- If you have any emotional aspect to portray surely do it.
Now let me give you an example:
Sir, apart from the details mentioned in my CV, I am a very humble, kind, analytical and witty person. I also like to share information with my friends, family and juniors because I believe that our knowledge grows on being spread.I have kept myself involved equally in both academics and co-curricular activities and imbibed an all round development.
Since, my school days I had a huge inclination towards Physics and Computer Science. After my 10+2 when I faced a situation to opt one between them I gave priority to CS as I believed it would help me exercise my creative mind and I could built and develop applications and software as well. DBMS and Data Structure has been my favorite subjects so far in my B.Tech tenure.
Though I faced a bit of difficulty in the college to hold on with the subjects, I strived on as I always wanted to excel more for my mother and my family. I have seen a lot of hardships since my father's dead and hence I am turned into a strong and mature human being today who understands people and there difficulties well.
(refer to https://www.tutorialspoint.com/software_engineering/software_engineering_interview_questions.htm for the answers of other technical questions.
So, these were some questions which were being asked to at direct. I was then asked what is my experience in testing a software? well I gave a cunning answer to it. I would let you know that but before I must tell you that currently a lot of frameworks and tools are been used for testing a software. But I didn't use any :p ... So, while answering I focused on my ability to debug the issue manually without any tool. As an example I used my 2 projects which were solely built and debugged by me.
A final question that was being hurled at me was a bit tricky .
Question: Suppose a room has a bulb and u have 3 switches in the switch board. What are the minimum and maximum number of test cases or switch ON events required to find the switch of that bulb?
After this came the HR round. I was asked a lot of questions pointing out the skills and activities I mentioned. So, while mentioning anything be sure you have a good experience in it. Let me point the questions.
Ques: you have mentioned that you are a team player, tell me what will you do if your team mates take necessary leave dumping a lot of work on you.
First, without wasting any time in criticizing anybody I will prioritize the works and will start with them settling them one by one. Once done with the work I will look after for occasions where this kind of desertification of me with work continues. Few could have genuine reason but others might do it intentionally so I would convey this to my HR via my team leader and would discuss the matter.
Ques: What are your salary expectations.?
Thought I am a fresher I am skilled enough to pace up with training provided. Surely, you must be having a salary slab set for the freshers and I expect it will be decent enough to keep me happily working at your place.
Ques: I see you run an YouTube channel. so what stuffs do you contribute there?
My YouTube channel is to spread knowledge. I myself face difficulty I dealing with certain topics which are not available in YouTube or if available does not convey adequate and clear information. So, whenever I encounter such topics I make something on it. like I made a lecture on max-min tree, window to view port conversion, A lecture on Amcat Computer Science questions etc
Ques: I see you have 2 years of experience in Network Marketing. So, what did you do there? Please refer to this link for it:Network Marketing
- I even added to it the benefits I had from It
- I helped me developed a wonderful personality.
- I helped me get rid of my fear of public speaking.
- I helped me learn team management and time management.
- It helped me learn a lot on body language and human behavior.
- It helped me to learn and earn as well
Ques: Why did you start a YouTube channel.?
I observed that YouTube has become a good source of earning Residual Income. And there was scope of coming up with a lot of contents which are not available or if available not proper enough. So, I started a channel of my own.
The interview was settled well but the results are not out. What I realized is confidence and communication skills matters a lot.
An ex-student of Techno India college went into the cabin after me but he was sent back just after 2 minutes for his poor communication an nervousness.
